Open Letter About Abortion

To the young men who feel unaffected by the recent repeal of Roe v. Wade,
With the recent overturn of Roe v. Wade, pro-choice activists have had to resort to new methods of civil disobedience in order to gain back their rights. Red states have put bans and restrictions on abortion rights. Some states outright banned abortion while others like our own only made it harder to achieve. Regardless, these restrictions have caused a massive influx of people who need abortions but do not have legal access to one.
People have counteracted these new legal barriers by forming an “underground railroad” of sorts to allow women to make it to more progressive states that protect abortion rights. I support this civil disobedience because the Roe v. Wade appeal was a change made by the supreme court not the people, a massive step back for progressivism, and harmed more people than it helped. The overturn of Roe v. Wade was a change made by the outdated Supreme Court system. The people of the United States had very little direct say in the choice to overturn the long-standing amendment.
The Supreme Court was not in any way voted for by the people and they made the choice to overturn Roe v. Wade. Many of the Supreme Court justices were also appointed by presidents who have long since left office, which means the people did not even get to pick the justices who made the decision.
Millions of women had their voices completely ignored when the overturn was made which I believe makes it a breach of everything America stands for. The United States is a country of democracy where the country’s decisions are made by voting by the people. The overturn of Roe v. Wade contradicts any of those American ideals which makes it justified for the people to be angry. The people should refuse to support a system that ignores what they want and breaks the American promise that their voices will be heard.
As a young man or just a man in general you may think that the overturn of Roe v. Wade does not affect you. You could not be further from the truth. The repeal of a longstanding right like abortion opens the floodgates to a multitude of scary possibilities for the government. Who is to say which right will be repealed next? Freedom of speech? Religion? Perhaps the right to bear arms?
Roe v. Wade’s repeal has put every guarantee that the government has ever made to you in jeopardy. Even if the right to abortion may not affect men, others do. This is why I suggest that men assist women in opposing this breach of justice. Go to a protest, call your local legislation, or if you are able to, help women defy the new laws of red states. Even if you were not affected, even if you agree that abortion is immoral, even if you are not an activist, if you are a freedom-loving American man you will agree that the government being able to take our rights at any time is unacceptable. Men should see the overturn of Roe v. Wade for what it is, a sign that the government is abusing its power over the people.
Sincerely, a man who supports freedom
